Appearance…
Green-eyed Whitney has gone through many different changes over the years. Her hair has been about six different colors over the years, ranging from blonde to purple to orange and to her original honey color. Currently it’s a shortly cropped dark brown. At a height of 5’6”, the thirty-one year old is of an average build, if a little more muscled than most and with smaller, flatter breasts than many women, and can usually always be seen smiling, laughing, or cracking a funny face. While not a huge fan of over-the-top makeup, Whitney does adore her black eyeliner.

She’s always rebelled against those who say she can’t do something, and those (mostly her mother) who say she should wear long sleeves and pants more often only make the woman want to wear sleeveless tops and shorts all the more. The better to show off her tattoos, Whitney admits. She has fewer tattoos and piercings than most body artists she’s encountered, yet still has a good amount to show for herself. Her first tattoo, located on her lower left calf, is probably her favorite. Those who take themselves and politics too seriously don’t find much humor in the image of an eagle smoking a cigar against an American flag backdrop, but Whitney sure as hell finds it amusing (and patriotic!). In total, the woman has two other tattoos (a peace sign on her right wrist and the Chinese symbol for “dream” on her left bicep), and seven piercings (three in each ear and one in her left nostril).
Personality…
It could be said that there are two completely different sides to Whitney. On the one side, let’s call it the bland side, she is serious and temperamental, a confident (though some may call it cocky) person that not everyone always likes to be around. Whitney blames her mother for those aspects of her personality. The other side, the spicy side, is more freedom-loving and cheerful, a warm person that many people find themselves drawn to. She often describes herself as “just a big kid,” and while this can sometimes be appealing, it also has its downsides. Whitney is a smart girl, but can often be tactless (what she calls honesty) and indiscreet. Humor is her vice, as often is a blind optimism that makes her impatient in some situations. Despite her sometimes superficial nature, Whitney is not an unsympathetic person. She cares a great deal for those with whom she’s close, and would go above and beyond to help them in times of need. She is energetic and adventurous, always exploring and wanting to try new things.

Special skills or hobbies: She has no trouble keeping a vibrating needle steady, a requirement if one wants to be successful in the business of tattooing. She enjoys painting - especially abstract - and creating original art for tattoos. She knows how to handle a bow and arrow, however she never uses it to kill animals. Mostly Whitney shoots manmade targets, using the exotic skill to impress others. The woman can also fire a gun with sufficient skill.
Weaknesses: An opinionated woman, Whitney often speaks her mind when she probably should just remain silent. Being a fan of outdoor activities, one might expect a person such as that to be fairly good at tracking, however, Whitney is an exception. The best of her tracking skills comprises only of her abilitiy to tell which direction she's going in.

Likes: Body art, abstract painting, comedy, sci-fi/horror films, role-playing, American pride, strip clubs, watching her friend Skye compete in the Roller Derby, caving with Al and the team
Dislikes: A blank canvas, really cheesy musicals, discrimination, demands, most politics
Life and times…
The second of two daughters born to a construction worker father and cosmetologist mother was born in the autumn of 1973. From the age of five up until the age of nine, young Whitney was the unfortunate victim of a crazy loon of a mother who insisted upon entering the girl in every beauty contest Whitney was eligible for. Whitney hated every minute of it, though it wasn’t until the age of nine when she found the courage to rebel against her mother’s wishes. That was the turning point in their mother/daughter relationship, and ever since then Emily Emmerson has gone out of her way to show favoritism for her eldest daughter, Whitney’s sister Natalie. Likewise, Whitney has spent much of her life rebelling against her mother, often sinking so low as to do things just to piss the woman off. Childish, maybe, yet all the times Whitney has tried to reconcile with her mother, she’s always been shot down.

Though she wasn’t exactly what you’d call a trouble-maker in school - she was actually well-behaved in all her classes - she involved herself with a crowd of friends that were a little rough around the edges. Those who smoke and drank underage, had sex and got piercings and tattoos without their parents knowing about it. Like most people, Whitney has her share of regrets, but she knows that the past can't be changed. She is who she is.

In 1989, at the age of sixteen, she became acquainted with Skyelar Clarette, a girl who lived on the same block as one of Whitney's friends. The two hung out with much the same crowd, but didn't start to develope a true friendship until they went off to high school. That was when they became best friends.

She became a tattoo artist right out of high school, gifting her very brave friend Skyelar her first tattoo. Her mother was greatly angered by the news that one of her daughters wasn’t going to go to college (at least not yet), and kicked Whitney out of the house. Life seemed to go further downhill after that. Her parents soon divorced, and Whitney found herself living with an abusive boyfriend in a rundown apartment. At the age of twenty-one, she even tried to kill herself while her boyfriend was at work. Though she admits that it was probably just her fuzzy imagination, Whitney has said that the sight of her grandfather appearing in front of her as she faded in and out of consciousness was her first sort of paranormal experience. Her Grandfather Emmerson had died a few years before she was born, although she had seen pictures of him and knew it was him she was seeing (or imagining).

After her suicide attempt, Whitney was put into counseling for a while. Her father and counselor both helped her to clean up her life, get rid of the abusive boyfriend and even try to reconcile with her mother again. The former was a success, but the latter... Well, Emily’s speaking to her again, though hasn’t completely forgiven Whitney for “screwing up her life.”

Three months following her recovery, Whitney returned to her job at the tattoo parlor. Some flirting ensued between her and a new costumer, and after a year of persuading she found herself involved with another guy. Though he was still a little rough around the edges, something Whitney found irresistible in a man, he never raised a hand or his voice against her. They would date off and on for the next five years.

During the time she was with her new boyfriend, Whitney began to think more about her future. Though she loved her job, she didn’t want to be a tattoo artist for the rest of her life. She began to think about her life experiences and how they had affected her. She knew she wasn’t the only one to go through similarly horrible things, nor would she be the last. She wanted to help people, just like her counselors had helped her. She enrolled in the Counseling and Psychology program at Argosy University in 1997. She would graduate in 2001.

However, a career in psychology was apparently not to be. An internship with a local child psychologist seemed to go well at first, until news reached Whitney that the parents of some of her patients greatly disapproved of their children having sessions with a psychologist who had tattoos and piercings, as well as a history of drinking, smoking, and a suicide attempt. While Whitney was willing to get rid of her piercings, she was not willing to do so with her tattoos. So she was fired.

July of 2002 found the woman back working full-time at the tattoo parlor.

October 7, 2003, during a visit to her father’s house, Whitney came across a letter sent from a town in California that she remembered learning briefly about in a high school history class. Curious, she asked her father about the letter and was told about the invitation to come to the town and investigate some sort of haunting. Joseph Emmerson wasn’t impressed, but Whitney found herself intrigued. Though the invitation was initially sent to Joseph, as his daughter, and apparently a direct descendent of some of the original inhabitants of Shelby, California, Whitney felt the invitation could apply to her as well. So she sent her reply, and prepared for the trip.

For the first two weeks of January 2004, Whitney Emmerson was in California hunting ghosts. The trip itself was an experience Whitney would not soon forget. She was able to contact an entity she believed was Angelo, the only male brothel worker to ever grace New Shelby, but was unable to get any name from the spirit to confirm her belief. She also made a new friend, a cave explorer by the name of Al Sinclair. The two women entered a relationship together, and after leaving Shelby, Whitney expressed interest in wanting to accompany Al and the spelunking team on their explorations.
